Comprising four members, namely Prof. Zhang Chunling, Prof. Li Xiaoguang, Prof. Wang Yurong and Dr. Chin Wing Yee, the Chinese Medicine Gynaecology Team has dedicated unwavering efforts to nurturing a new generation of proficient Chinese Medicine practitioners. While each team member specialises in a different gynaecology stream with distinct perspectives and focuses, they collaborate closely to ensure that a good integration of various perspectives and practices is included in course content – both in theoretical knowledge and clinical experience.
Adopting a student-led approach in teaching, the team strives to apply the most suitable pedagogy to facilitate students’ understanding of knowledge and its real-life application. As teaching of gynaecology with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in a conventional setting involves memorising extensive classical theories and prescriptions, the team introduces the innovative “on-site diagnosis and treatment” in class to engage students in real-life clinical scenarios. The role-playing exercises create a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere for studying and the hands-on training of skills of observation, questioning, examination and for writing medical records. This sparks students’ critical thinking and cultivates their problem-solving skills, successfully turning studying from passive lecturing to proactive instruction.
In line with their overarching aim to broaden students’ horizons and enhance their overall understanding of TCM gynaecology, the team members regularly share their practical experience and medical cases in specific health issues in different regions. Students find this sharing to be engrossing and useful in facilitating them to learn how to integrate and apply theories to practice, and how to approach and tackle new problems.
Apart from providing academic advice, the team emphasises students’ whole-person and all-round development. In their teaching of gynaecology, the focus is not only on academic achievements, but also on the proper care of patients’ emotions and their physical and mental health, thereby preparing the students to be socially responsible TCM practitioners.
To promote their teaching excellence and learning from best practices, team members are keen to engage in a variety of professional development activities. They frequently participate in conferences and workshops organised by associations with high academic standing, as well as international seminars such as those of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, when scholars from around the world gather to exchange current research findings in gynaecology.
To foster academic exchange and collaboration, team members hold regular clinical case discussion meetings on patient diagnosis and treatment processes. These gatherings serve as an important platform for sharing experiences and insights, integrating and gathering suitable clinical cases for teaching. This practice not only enhances the collective knowledge of the team but also proves to be a synergistic way of enriching clinical teaching materials.
Through their truly collaborative practices, the Chinese Medicine Gynaecology Team has set an exceptional sample in building a holistic and humanistic approach to the teaching and learning of TCM gynaecology. Their engaging style has effectively equipped students with essential knowledge and skills for their future medical journeys, priming them to become caring practitioners with the patients’ benefit and well-being kept in mind. The team is thus found to be truly worthy recipients of the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Team Teaching.
